Han Fokkink, master florist and Dutch champion in floral art, has been a florist for over 30 years now. He shares his tips for anyone who wants to become a master in the floristry profession.
"You are the expert and your customers feel this too"
“A solid basic knowledge of flowers and plants is essential – you need to know what you are working with. But technical skills are also indispensable. Attend workshops, watch international competitions such as the Floral Art World Cup. You can learn a lot from other countries. I always say that knowledge is power. And remain curious: the profession is constantly changing. Do you want to distinguish yourself with the title of master florist? Then follow the two-year full-time floral art programme at Aeres University of Applied Sciences. This two-year programme focuses on technique and product knowledge.
If you know what you're talking about, you can advise your customers with confidence. If a customer asks a question, you can give them a clear and well-informed answer. It gives you power in your store; you are the expert, and your customers feel this too.
A good florist works with respect for nature, the materials and the beauty that lies within them. Those who appreciate and express this make a real difference in this profession.”
