“We received phone calls from all over the Netherlands”

Family business Josina Bloemen in the Dutch city of Oss has been around for over a hundred years, and in 2014, friends Mireille and Suzanne took over the shop.

In 2018, they witnessed a tragic incident in which four children were killed when an electric kids wagon (Stint) was hit by a train at a railroad crossing; a fifth child and the supervisor were seriously injured. “I will never forget that; it had such an impact here in the city,” says Suzanne.

Mireille adds: “We made funeral arrangements for the families and the memorial service. We received phone calls and emails from people all over the Netherlands who wanted to donate money so that we could lay flowers at the railroad crossing. It was very impressive and, in a way, also quite beautiful that people trusted us to take care of this.”
