Organic flowers

Increasingly more florists and consumers consider it important that the products they buy are as sustainable as possible. In an interview with grower Geert op ’t Hof, who has been working towards a completely organic flower farm for many years now, we examined how that works.

If you look after the soil, the soil will look after your plant.

Geert explains how he believes that works: “Instead of artificial fertiliser, we use organic fertiliser. This gives the soil a more open structure and more air. This promotes a diverse biology in the soil. And that in turn ensures that the plant is more
resistant to disease and pests.

Various certificates are available that demonstrate that flowers have been produced in a sustainable manner. A SKAL certificate, for example. The website of Milieu Centraal provides a quality mark guide outlining a large number of certificates.

They grow over 150 different flowers, which are promoted throughout the year based on Royal FloraHolland's availability dates.
