Gypsophila: a flower for every season

Brother and sister Gert-Jan and Lydia Klaver grow gypsophila all year round in Ethiopia. Thanks to the sunny climate and the sandy soil, sturdy, bright white flowers thrive here. The flowers are transported in a dried state and rehydrated on arrival in the Netherlands, a process that requires the utmost precision.

Gypsophila has become remarkably popular in recent years: whereas it used to be mainly used as a filler flower, it is now a staple in bridal arrangements and even looks stunning on its own in a vase. With its airy texture and long vase life, the flower is suitable for any season.

“You can do anything with it: from romantic bridal bouquets to understated funeral arrangements,” says Lydia. “Gypsophila adds volume without looking heavy. In a simple bouquet, you often only need a few sprigs to create a dramatic effect.” To ensure they last, she advises: “Place the flowers in clean water with a flower food solution. This will keep the blooms bright white. Always include flower food with the bouquet; that way, they’ll stay beautiful for weeks. Another tip for your customer: don’t place Gips in direct sunlight, just like other flowers. Let them dry out nicely for months of enjoyment.”
